Top 10 College Football Coaches..Right here, Right now.

Oh the offseason.  All the time in the world to speculate, pontificate and macerate.

90 days and a wake up until the summer is over and we are kicking off.  August 28th with the Demon Deacons against the Bible Bears,  followed by the Fighting Beavers versus the Stanford Trees.  I'm picking the Bears to win (yikes!  yes I'm sober) and the Trees to win by double digits.

I was asked my thoughts on this list from rivals.com by Dan F. from Compton (who I owe $100 to) on the top 10 current coaches, so here you go…..

Top 10 College Football Coaches

1.   Pete Carroll -   USC – Painfully undeniable.  Pete buys them cheap and stacks them deep.  Top recruiting classes are perpetuated by a big number of day one draft picks and the Al Davis motto, “just win baby.”  It also doesn’t hurt that they don’t have to play a conf championship.  The only thing that will stop this powerhouse of the PAC10 is UCRA.

2.   Jim Tressel -  Ohio St. – Big fish in a small pond.  The big 10 has been not so big in  recent years which would explain The Ohio State University cruising to the championship game and then getting spanked by the SEC.  I guess a lot of other teams didn’t make it.  And you guessed it, no conf championship.  He can stay at #2.

3.   Urban Meyer -  Florida  - The Urban renewal in Florida was all homemade banana pudding and no bake cookies until the offseason got here.  Urban’s a good coach, but his handling of off the field issues is going to be his downfall.  No wonder he wears a chain on his wallet.  Urban has to be in the top 10, but not #3.

4.   Les Miles   -    LSU – “I’ll take this team and play any sucker in the country.  I like the fight in this team…the resolve.”  Les Miles has a huge pair under that big hat of his.  I read somewhere that he calls plays like no one is watching and nothing is on the line.  As much as I hate him, he’d have to be #3 in my book.  Still don’t understand why he wasn’t willing to trade crooklyn for Ann Arbor.

5.   Bob Stoops -     Oklahoma  - Now in our “what ever happened to..” section, we are looking for the coach formerly known as “Big Game” Bob who navigated an overachieving team through Texass, Nebraska, KSU, A&M, KSU again and Free Shoe University to win the NC.  He has since been replaced by a guy who has coached 4 back to back BCS bowl losses.  People say “well he’s been to four BCS bowls and that’s good” and that’s like playing the lotto and getting your dollar back.  #7

6.    Mark Richt   -    Georgia – Former U grad knows tradition and drugs.  I’ve been really impressed with him.  Except for a weird stretch in ’06 where they lost 4 games in 5 weeks, the Bulldogs are the model of consistency.  #4

7.     Frank Beamer -  Va. Tech  Sympathy vote.  This vote is because the guys at Rivals.com like to say “Beamer Ball.”  Really, 2004-2007 the Hokies have been consistent with 3 loss seasons but when I think of Va Tech, I think of the 2004 victory over the U and the LSU spank fest from last year.

8.    Jim Grobe -   Wake Forrest – To pick up where Wake Forest left off last year with their victory over #25 UConn, Wake has scheduled the fighting Baylor Bears.  The other ranked team that Wake beat last year was Free Shoe University.  Sorry Jim.  You aren’t bottom 10, but you aren’t top 10 either.

9.    Tommy Tuberville -  Auburn – Not really much to say about Tommy.  Right team, wrong conference is what most people think, but inexcusable losses to South Florida and Mississippi State showed a team that was not prepared.  Coaching.

10.  Mack Brown -  Texas – With their perennially tough out of conference menu of beans and Rice, Sam Houston State and Arkansas State you can see why Mack Brown is on the list.  Okay.  No you can’t.  Me neither.  All hate for Texass aside, Macky mack and the cheeba bunch have put together some pretty consistent years and a NC even though they've not been to a BCS since the NC.

People who were left out and should have been in the top 10 if you are talking top ten coaches right now:

Nick “The spawn of” Saban
Rich “Mo Money” Rodriguez
Dennis Erickson

And since I have no idea who the hundreds of other people who read this blog every week are, post a comment or give a shout out.  quinton@firebobbyjack.com
